Thermal imaging detects heat, not light — allowing you to spot animals, vehicles or people even in total darkness. It works by reading infrared radiation and converting it into a visible thermal image on-screen.
This makes thermal imaging far more powerful than traditional night vision — especially when working in poor UK weather, drizzle, coastal fog or when game is hidden behind hedges, crop cover or woodland edges.
How Does Thermal Imaging Work?
Modern thermal imagers use highly sensitive sensors to detect small differences in temperature and turn them into a clear image.

What is NETD (mK) – and why does it matter?
When comparing thermal imagers, you will often see a NETD value, usually written as something like “NETD < 35 mK”. NETD stands for Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference and is measured in millikelvin (mK). It represents the smallest temperature difference the sensor can distinguish from background noise.
The lower the NETD value, the more sensitive the sensor. A unit with NETD <50 mK is perfectly usable, but <40 mK or <35 mK delivers noticeably clearer contrast in damp air, drizzle or mist — typical UK field conditions. High-end sensors at around <25 mK can highlight subtle heat signatures such as the outline of a fox, deer or vehicle against a cool hedge line.
Sensor resolution – from entry-level to 1280
Thermal sensors are defined by their pixel array — for example 256×192, 384×288, 640×512 and even 1280-class. In simple terms, more pixels mean greater detail and cleaner edges when identifying targets.

Magnification & pixelation when zooming
Thermal devices have a base (optical) magnification, which uses the full resolution of the sensor. Above this, digital zoom is applied (2×, 4×, 8×). Digital zoom does not add detail — it enlarges existing pixels, which is why lower-resolution sensors quickly become pixelated when zoomed in.
Higher-resolution sensors can tolerate more digital zoom before image breakdown, which helps with:
- Positive target identification at longer distances
- Scanning wide areas then zooming in for detail
- Working confidently in foggy, damp UK conditions
